I’m sitting at a glass topped oak desk in a overly small bedroom on the second floor of the Algonquin Hotel on 44th in Manhattan. The lamp next to me flickers a bit, the heat finally came on a few minutes ago, and I can hear every word said in the hallways. It may seem like a bad experience but I’m truly drawing inspiration just being here.
For those that don’t know, at the turn of the 20th century the Algonquin hotel was at the center of NYC’s literary culture, where you could find a number of famous authors and writers grazing the halls and meeting for their round table to discuss and create their unique literary style. Even today authors visit to take inspiration from here, and this is where William Faulker drafted his Nobel acceptance speech.
It seems to be a place stuck in the past, and with the exception of the flat screen stuck to the side of this tiny room, I would have thought I was in the 20’s. History still resides in the walls, and it’s seeping out to those of us willing to accept. It will show in my art soon enough.
